Using some of the map designs I had created, I started experimenting with layering, and designed these colourful images which I thought could be made into interesting looking postcards.
As I’ve mentioned in the Mapping Leiria blog post, I quite liked the idea of having these maps which do not work as functional, practical documents but rather as images with a purely aesthetic purpose.
By depicting my city, that is, a very subjective view of Leiria, I thought I could get people curious and interested in finding more about this place – which is something that does not happen often with a “regular map”.
I think postcards as a medium would work very well in this context, as their smaller size would allow people to carry them quite easily. I would very much prefer to have these personal maps given to people, rather than presenting them in a larger scale in an exhibition space; their purpose – promoting Leiria – would be better fulfilled if people could access them with ease.
